Households in Milton Keynes invited to light a candle at 8pm to mark Holocaust Memorial Day

Households across the city are invited to light a candle at 8pm this evening (27/1) to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

Prince Charles has asked tasked the nation with "bearing witness" to the Holocaust. Today is dedicated to the millions of people - including six million Jews - who were murdered under Nazi rule during the Second World War.

Holocaust Memorial Day takes place on the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp.

This year, however, its scope has been widened to include all victims of genocide.

This afternoon The Mayor of Milton Keynes, Cllr Andrew Geary, hosted a virtual Facebook live whilst at the Milton Keynes Rose.

Usually, residents would gather at the Rose for a ceremony, but due to the pandemic, this had to move online.

A short talk by Paul Salver, formerly a teacher at Sir Herbert Leon Academy, some words from the Mayor of MK Cllr Andrew Geary and a poem for the occasion by the city's poet laureate Mark Niel, will be posted on the Rose's website to mark the date.

The UK Holocaust Memorial Day Ceremony will take place at 7pm “to remember all those who were murdered for who they were” and to “stand against prejudice and hatred in the world today”.

And tonight at 8pm, households in Milton Keynes and beyond are being encouraged to light a candle and place it safely in their window.
