Households in Milton Keynes could be fined £1,000 for not completing the census

Experts have warned that households in Milton Keynes could face a £1,000 fine for not completing this year's census.

Residents should have received an invitation calling on them to complete the 2021 census, a compulsory survey that provides detailed information about all of the households in England and Wales.

The information gathered from the census helps the government, councils, and health authorities plan and fund public services like transport, education and health – from cycle routes and schools to green spaces and dental surgeries.

It also provides the most accurate snapshot of demographics and populations living within certain areas.

Census day is this Sunday (21/3) and the forms must be completed by then otherwise households could face prosecution, a £1,000 fine, and a criminal record.

Financial journalist Martin Lewis, who is the founder of Money Saving Expert, has called on everybody to complete it.

He said: "You can be fined up to £1,000 if you don't complete the Census.

"It's an offence to supply false information or not to complete the Census, and you could be fined up to £1,000.

"Fines are a last resort though. In England and Wales, four people received the maximum £1,000 fine for non-compliance at the last census in 2011, while a further 270 people were fined an average of £218."

Letters have been sent out to all households with a unique code to access the census form online.

Alternatively, a paper form can be requested on the Census website or by calling 0800 141 2021.

There is different support available for those who need assistance filling out the census. In Milton Keynes, there is a Census Support Centre being run by Great Linford Parish Council.

Currently, due to COVID-19 restrictions, they are only available to assist by telephone. Anyone can call or email to make an appointment and they will talk you through the form as you complete it, whether you wish to do it online or have a paper version.

To book an appointment call 01908 606613 or email glpc@great-linford.gov.uk.
