Ground-breaking 5G technology developing new products and services at Stadium MK

Milton Keynes Council and its partners have been using ground-breaking 5G technology to develop new products and services, supporting the city to continue growing sustainably.

Earlier this year, during an event at Stadium MK, industry leaders in modern tech came together to show what new 5G technology can achieve. Some of the products and services on display at the event included:

    • Autonomous vehicles to help people get around the stadium and surrounding areas
    • Drones to capture never-seen-before camera angles at the stadium
    • Supporting hotel guests with robot assistants

John Cove, Director of MK Dons, commented: “The Stadium has been proud to be part of a Team MK effort to further the deployment of new technology utilising 5G, whether it is autonomous cars, AI work or robotics, Milton Keynes is living up to its City of Firsts reputation.”

MK Council is proud to be working with a range of partners on this project, bringing together a world class consortium to design, plan and install the network, supporting the council’s growth plans and sustainability ambitions.

Following the success of the trial, the Council is committed to fully integrating the 5G network into the city along with working in partnership with the new university, MK:U and running a second accelerator programme, the Milton Keynes Accelerator, delivered by Connected Places Catapult designed to support SMEs with innovative solutions which can improve connectivity and boost urban sustainability in the city.

This is a ground-breaking initiative which sees MK deliver a unique capability – its own 5G network, which can be used to develop new products and services designed to enable the city to develop and grow sustainably, giving businesses in MK a unique advantage and support recovery after Covid.

Brian Matthews, Head of Transport Innovation for Milton Keynes Council, commented:  “The trial has been a huge success and marks an important step in Milton Keynes’ journey in remaining a leading smart city. This demonstrates that the 5G network has endless capabilities and benefits for everyone connected to the city. I’d like to thank all our partners and I look forward to continuing this work to create smarter and greener experiences for everyone that lives, works and visits MK.”
