Government reverses decision to tax workers on coronavirus tests at work

The Government has made a U-turn and announced that employees will NOT be taxed for coronavirus tests at work.

Last week, HMRC published guidance stating that COVID-19 tests purchased by employers are a taxable benefit in kind. This controversial decision caused mass uproar, with MPs and the Chair of the Treasury writing to the Chancellor asking him to look into the matter.

The Government has since reversed its decision, and has stated that such tests will now be exempt.

Ben Everitt, MP for Milton Keynes North, had said that HMRC's guidance was "baffling" and "wrong". He told MKFM: "I welcome the swift action to correct this. No one should be penalised for doing the right thing."

Currently, anyone in England and Wales who has symptoms of coronavirus, whatever their age, can get a free test through the NHS.
