People in Milton Keynes have been urged to prioritise their vision and give themselves ‘the gift of sight’ this Christmas.
With friends and families getting together throughout the busy festive season it can be easy to take your eyes off the ball when it comes to looking after your sight, but it’s also a good time to talk about implementing healthy vision habits for 2026 and beyond.
“It’s safe to say that our vision is something we all take for granted and it is usually hard to be grateful for something when we’ve had it all our lives," said Reena Katta of DW Roberts which has practices in Bletchley, Newport Parnell, Stony Stratford and Wolverton, "However, many people around the world might consider good eyesight a luxury. Healthy vision plays a crucial role in our overall health and well-being so it’s important to spend time looking after our eyes.
“Christmas is all about giving but we’d urge everyone to do something for themselves this festive season and book in for a comprehensive eye exam to help put prioritising your vision at the top of your to-do list for 2026.
“It’s a classic time of the year to focus on fitness, joining the gym or getting into shape, but eye health is equally as important for our overall wellbeing.”
Give the Gift of Sight Month is a global campaign running throughout December every year. It is led by non-profit organisation Prevent Blindness and aims to raise awareness about eye health around the world.
As part of this year’s campaign, Reena outlined six tips to help you care for your eyes:
- Book in with your optometrist for a comprehensive eye exam.
- Add fruits, leafy greens and foods rich in omega-3s, such as fish, to meals to support healthy eyes.
- Put on sunglasses outside to shield your eyes from the sun and harmful UV rays.
- Keep your hands clean before touching your face or putting in contact lenses.
- Rest your eyes during screen time by taking regular breaks to look at something far away.
- Use safety glasses during sports or when doing anything that could put your eyes at risk.
Your eyes don’t just help you see the world, they reveal vital clues about your overall health - from diabetes to high blood pressure.
Regular eye examinations can catch issues early, protect your long-term vision, and keep you performing at your best every day.
