Future of Milton Keynes tower blocks will be decided next week with complete demolition looking likely

The future of two ageing tower blocks is set to be decided by Milton Keynes Council next week.

In October 2020, it was announced that Mellish Court in Bletchley and The Gables in Wolverton, both 60-year-old buildings, do not meet current fire safety standards.

Milton Keynes Council has since been working closely with Bucks Fire and also introduced 24-hour fire safety wardens.

The local authority has consulted with residents to decide the future of both tower blocks, with the council's preferred option being to completely demolish and rebuild them.

In a recent consultation, tenants and leaseholders of Mellish Court and The Gables have also shared the same views as the council - with residents showing a strong preference for the two buildings to be demolished and replaced.

The decision set for 9th March will allow the council to hire architects to develop proposals and begin the consultation with residents on the options.

Milton Keynes Council says the community will be consulted before any plans are progressed.

MKFM has confirmed with Milton Keynes Council that council tenants will be rehomed in Milton Keynes while the works take place, and will not be moved out of the city.

There are many families living in these tower blocks, so remaining as close as possible means that children can keep their school places.

Cllr Emily Darlington, Cabinet member responsible for Council Housing, said: “I’d like to thank the residents for their contributions to the consultation.  This decision will enable us to move away from these old buildings and replace them with new homes that better meet people’s needs.

“Many residents have already moved into their new homes and we are working with the others to find them a place that is right for them.  We will continue our conversations with local people about what matters to them as we take the plans forward.”
