Flags will fly at half-mast in Milton Keynes until after Prince Philip's funeral

    Flags will be flying at half-mast across Milton Keynes following the news that Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, died today (9/4).

    The news, which has left the nation in a state of mourning, was announced by Buckingham Palace shortly after 12pm. 

    A statement from the Palace said: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

    "His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."

    Tributes have since been pouring in from across the globe, with many prominent local figures sharing their messages of condolences. 

    Shortly after midday, Number 10 lowered its flag to half-mast, with this also being done here in Milton Keynes.

    The Mayor of Milton Keynes, Cllr Andrew Geary, has said that flags are flying at half-mast at Milton Keynes Council's Civic Offices and Station Square by Milton Keynes Central. 

    Cllr Andrew Geary has issued a tribute to Prince Philip, which reads: "It is with great sadness that Milton Keynes Council hears of the death of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. 

    "We send our deep condolences to the Royal Family on behalf of the people of Milton Keynes. I will be writing to The Royal Household to express our sympathies.

    "Flags are now flying at half-mast at the Council’s civic offices and will do so at Station Square; they will continue to fly at half-mast until after the funeral of His Royal Highness.

    "Due to current COVID-19 restrictions no Book of Condolence will be opened in Milton Keynes and local people who wish to send condolences are invited to do so on the Buckingham Palace online Book of Condolence, which will be available at www.royal.uk."

    Anyone who wishes to place flowers can do so while observing social distancing precautions at the Milton Keynes Rose in Campbell Park.
