Documentary about Captain Tom Moore's WW2 adventures to air on VE Day

Captain Tom Moore, age 99, will tell of his wartime adventures in a programme that will air on ITV on VE Day next month.

He stole the hearts of the nation, raising nearly £30 million for the NHS by walking 100 lengths of his garden before his 100th birthday. Now, he will be sharing his memories of his time fighting in Burma.

According to ITV, the documentary will see Captain Tom discuss the Burma campaign - a series of battles against the invading forces of Imperial Japan. One million Allied troops from 40 nations attempted to repel the invading troops from the British colony, which happened between 1941 and 1944.

In the documentary, Captain Tom will honour the soldiers that fought in the war. His daughters, Hannah and Lucy, will also share personal family photographs of their trip back to Burma.

Tom Giles, ITV's Controller of Current Affairs, said: "Captain Tom’s War will shed light on a campaign which comparatively goes unmentioned but in which our troops suffered unthinkable hardship and tens of thousands of British soldiers fought and died.

"Hearing this from Captain Tom Moore, who fought in Burma, means we will find out a lot more about the man who has done so much to raise our spirits at this time and the experience he and many others faced during World War Two on an occasion when we rightly come together to thank them for their sacrifice.”

Captain Tom's War will air on ITV at 8pm on Friday 8th May 2020.
