Demolition of Milton Keynes tower block begins after tenants are found new homes

Work on demolishing The Gables in Wolverton has started

Almost 200 households were relocated from Council-owned tower blocks, The Gables and Melish Court, last year, after Milton Keynes City Council found new and better homes for its tenants.

The process to knock down The Gables tower block is underway and contractors Keltbray work are working from the top to take one floor apart at a time.

Around 95% of the materials from the building will be recycled.

Work on Mellish Court in Bletchley is also expected to begin next month.

Earlier this year, the empty sites were used by Bucks Fire and Rescue service for fire safety training.

Cabinet Member for Adults, Housing and Healthy Communities, Cllr Emily Darlington said: “It’s really positive to see progress being made with replacing these tower blocks.

"Once the demolition has been completed, we’ll be speaking with local people living around both The Gables and Mellish Court to determine the future of the sites. I’m confident that by working together with local communities, we’ll be able to create new healthy and happy neighbourhoods in these areas.”
