Council commits £250,000 to help get Milton Keynes women back into work

Milton Keynes Council is investing almost £250,000 in programmes to support women back into work.

Last year, the local authority launched an ambitious £2.25m economic recovery plan with a commitment to fund local groups, specifically helping those most affected by the pandemic.

Research suggests that women have been disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic; almost twice as likely as men to lose their jobs through the crisis.

Milton Keynes Council is backing a number of organisations that are supporting women, including helping young mums return to the workplace.

The programmes are designed to help women who have recently lost their jobs, are at risk of redundancy, or are looking to get back into work after a career break.

    Some of the programmes include:

    - Works For Us – local charity helping women find roles that suit them, with support available on CV preparation, job applications and interviews (contact: info@worksforus.org.uk)

    - Women’s Leaders – bespoke mentoring and networking programme to help women build confidence to return to work (contact: admin@womenleadersmk.co.uk)

    - Red thread – ‘World Class Manager’ training programme to support women into management and leadership roles (contact: inquiries@the-redthread.co.uk

Cllr Carole Baume, Cabinet Member for Economy and Culture, said: “This year we’re marking International Women’s Day by rolling out a range of programmes designed to support women. It’s tough for a lot of people right now and we know that women have had their careers unfairly affected by the pandemic.

“Our brilliant city is full of bright and aspirational women who we’re determined to help reach their true potential. I’d encourage anyone who is struggling with work and could benefit from these programmes to get in touch.”
