Council cracking down on fly tipping across MK

A crackdown to catch and prosecute fly tippers in MK has been pledged today by Councillor Emily Darlington, MK Council Cabinet Member for Public Realm.

MK Council has started to install CCTV cameras in fly tipping hotspots to catch offenders.  Dashcams are also being used to gather evidence.

If caught, fly tippers could be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice of £250, or prosecuted in court, where a fine of up to £50,000 or 5 years imprisonment could be handed out.

Cllr Emily Darlington said, “Fly tipping is a serious criminal offence, and we can and will prosecute.  In recent years we’ve successfully prosecuted around 30 offenders resulting in fines of more than £25,000. We have a target to reduce fly tipping across the borough and we have entered into a partnership with a local crime management company to assist us and monitor hot spots and other areas.”

The council is also urging local people not to fall foul of criminal waste removers.  You can pay people to take away your rubbish - but they should be a reputable trader.  If someone fly tips your rubbish, you could face a court appearance and fine, even if you paid them in good faith.

    Always consider:

    • Are they a Registered Waste Carrier with a valid licence?
    • How much are they charging?  If it sounds too good to be true then it probably is.
    • Where do they take their waste?  If in doubt, don’t use them.
    • Have you got a receipt with the carrier’s name and address?
    • Take a vehicle registration number.
