Chancellor pays tribute to Milton Keynes businesses as they re-open safely after lockdown

    The Chancellor Rishi Sunak paid tribute to businesses across Milton Keynes for the ‘enormous effort’ they’ve put into re-opening following the coronavirus lockdown.

    In his summer economic update this afternoon Rishi announced a new Eat Out To Help Out scheme which will give 50% discounts on meals in August to encourage people back to restaurants and cafes.

    Ben Everitt, the MP for Milton Keynes North, has been celebrating local businesses with his #BounceBackMK campaign and spoke in the Commons to encourage people in MK and from elsewhere to visit local businesses in the city.

    He said: “Will my Right Honourable Friend join me in encouraging everybody in Milton Keynes and in fact anybody that can travel to our Milton Keynes and market towns to eat out to help out?”

    Rishi responded, “He’s seen first hand what a great job his local businesses have done in ensuring that their premises are safe for us to return.

    “They’ve made an enormous effort to be able to welcome us back, now as I said with our new Eat Out To Help Out discount, we can all play our part in helping to support their businesses and protect those jobs.”

    The Chancellor also made some other unprecedented announcements to boost the economy and protect jobs during the speech including:

    • A VAT cut for the tourism and hospitality sector from 20% to 5% for six months
    • A Stamp Duty cut on the first £500,000 of house purchases until March 2021
    • A £2 billion Green Homes Grant
    • Employers will receive £2,000 for every new apprentice they hire, aged under 25, between August 2020 and January 2021
    • A £2 billion Kickstart Scheme to pay employers to create new jobs for 16-24 year olds
    • Paying companies a £1,000 bonus for every furloughed employee who is still employed on 31stJanuary 2021
