Business as usual for essential housing repairs

MK Council and its maintenance contractors are completing an essential repair to someone’s home every ten minutes during the coronavirus outbreak.

MKC’s housing maintenance contractor Mears is continuing to provide a 24/7 service, ensuring homes remain safe, secure and have appropriate power, lighting, heating and hot water, while still following government health guidelines and social distancing measures.

Since the introduction of this guidance in late March, the council‘s contractor has responded to an average of over 50 emergency/essential repairs requests per day – that’s around one job every ten minutes. MKC is continuing to deal with all housing queries, but is prioritising essential repairs for its most vulnerable tenants during this period.

Milton Keynes Council is investing £165 million in improving its homes, and its ongoing maintenance programme has already installed new roofs, kitchens, doors and windows for MK families. MKC will continue with its planned maintenance programme as soon as it safe to do so.

Mears is one of the partners working with MK Council to deliver essentials to vulnerable people through the Local Support Service.

Cabinet Member for Housing and Regeneration, Councillor Nigel Long said: “During this difficult period, we need to ensure that we look after those who are most vulnerable. The Council is committed to meeting the needs of vulnerable disabled and older tenants. Carrying out repairs to their homes is a top priority and highlights the importance we place on a high performing council housing service.

“I’d like to thank council colleagues and Mears who are working around the clock to ensure that we’re addressing issues raised by tenants and improving their homes.”
