Four colleagues are being praised for their thoughtful thinking after spotting a young girl distraught over losing her birthday money.

Lyndsay Toseland, Rachel Russell, Claire Horton and Viviane Modjom have been dubbed the 'Asda Angels' by the young girl's mum.

The mum took to twitter to thank Asda for their service, saying: "My daughter was beside herself as she dropped £10 of her birthday money in the store and unable to buy her book – Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. The Asda Angels came to the rescue and gave her a gift card so she could buy the book. Amazing!

"Your team deserve a medal for this. I was absolutely blown away by their kindness. My daughter is now sitting content in her room reading her new book, thanks again."

Checkout runner Lynsday said: "I saw the girl go over to her mum who was at the checkouts. She was brave at first but then just burst into tears! I mentioned it through my headset to my colleagues and Claire, on checkouts, then asked the lady if everything was okay and she told her what had happened. I then walked the shop floor to look for the note, but couldn't find it."

Colleague Rachel then noticed that the young girl was still crying, so asked the mother and daughter to wait by the checkouts while the team spoke to their section leader Viviane.

Lyndsay said: "The mums in us all asked if we could do a goodwill gesture for the girl and Viv agreed. It was the right thing to do. I then issued it at customer services and the girl paid for her book with it. I told them there was another £6 left on there for her to use! They were so grateful. It's so sweet that she wanted to buy a book with it... I hope she enjoyed it."
