Ahead of tonight's MKFM Live Debate, both parties comment on homeless progress

MKFM are hosting a live debate on their Facebook page tonight at 7, asking the people in charge how they are going to help solve the homelessness issue in Milton Keynes.

Homelessness is a burning issue in Milton Keynes, having been described in the national press as 'Tent City'.

Labour led Milton Keynes Council say tackling the issue remains a top priority, "Labour have committed over £5 million to tackling homelessness this year and next year. We are determined that families in temporary accommodation and vulnerable rough sleepers will be supported to find long term stable housing. We are making reasonable progress on homelessness, but until we are free to build we are still only putting plasters on the open wound of homelessness"

On the 31st March last year, there was a total of 732 families in temporary accommodation. As of 31st March this year, the number has been reduced by almost 100 to 635.

Leader of the Conservative Council Group, Cllr Alex Walker, says "This Labour Council has overseen a huge rise in homelessness. When they took control in 2014 less than 150 families were in temporary accommodation, for them to celebrate the fact there are now 635 families who are homeless is scandalous.

Homelessness has been Labour's biggest failing in office. We will shortly set out our plan to tackle the challenges we face as a city, but on the door step residents have been clear that it is time for change."

MKFM are tonight (5th April) holding a live debate on our Facebook Page between Peter Marland, Leader of Labour led Council and Mark Lancaster, MP for Milton Keynes North.
