999 ambulance service covering Milton Keynes 'extremely busy today'

South Central Ambulance Service, who cover Milton Keynes, have said their 999 service is "extremely busy today".

In a tweet on social media, the ambulance service said: "The teams in our emergency control rooms and out on the road will be prioritising those patients in a life-threatening condition."

"This means that we will take longer to reach some patients than usual. Please bear with us."

The news comes as a 'major incident' has been declared in the Thames Valley area, including Milton Keynes.

The major incident has been declared because there are growing pressures on the NHS across the region as coronavirus infection rates continue to rise at a rapid rate.

Neighbouring local authority Buckinghamshire Council had last week also declared a major incident due to fears of overwhelming pressure on hospitals.

The news about the major incident comes just hours before the Prime Minister is set to address the nation at 8pm tonight and set out "further steps" to combat the spread of COVID-19.
