312 coronavirus cases recorded in Milton Keynes as the city declares 'major incident'

There were 312 new coronavirus cases reported in Milton Keynes today, according to the latest Public Health England data.

It brings the total number of people tested positive in the city since the start of the pandemic to 11,515.

The 7-day case rate in Milton Keynes has risen from 828.3 cases per 100,000 people yesterday to 874.4 cases per 100,000 people today.

It comes as today (4/1) a major incident has been declared in the Thames Valley area, which includes Milton Keynes, as the pressure on hospitals is increasing rapidly.

A major incident is an event or situation that by definition has a range of serious consequences. These consequences are a call to action for authorities, including police and other emergency responders, meaning that special arrangements should be put in place.

Nationally, there were an additional 58,874 people tested positive today - which is the highest daily total since the pandemic started. Sadly an additional 407 people sadly died within 28 days of a positive test.

According to Gov data, four covid-linked deaths were recorded today in Milton Keynes.

Today's data comes just hours before Boris Johnson is set to address the nation about the latest steps to combat COVID-19, where it is widely expected he will announce a third national lockdown.

Boris Johnson will hold a press conference at 8pm.
