Food & Leisure Awards Support MKFM

THE city’s food awards has revealed the charities it will be backing at its inaugral event.

Milton Keynes Food and Leisure Awards organiser Steven Dryden-Hall this week revealed that the Food Bank and MKFM are the chosen charities of the year for the city-wide contest.

The charities will share the proceeds of a raffle set to take place at a gala awards night on May 13.

The event will take place at the Swan Inn in Milton Keynes Village and will see the winners of the food awards collect their prizes.

The Milton Keynes Citizen backed MK Food and Leisure Awards aims to honour the best restaurants, pubs, hotels, gyms and destinations in the city. People can vote for their favourite in each category via comment cards found at venues throughout Milton Keynes or by visiting the awards website.

A five strong judging panel will then make the final decision prior to the prestigious awards night.

The Food Bank

Last year The Food Bank handed out 7,489 food parcels to people who did not know where their next meal was coming from.

For the past eight years volunteers at the charity have been distributing parcels of tinned food to men, women and children in dire need.

The Food Bank aims to collect 200,000 items of food and raise £100,000 in donations during 2012.

MKFM

MKFM is on a mission to bring local radio back to the city.

The not for profit community radio station staffed by volunteers has been set up by the former management team from Horizon Radio/Heart FM.

They believe that Milton Keynes is an important city with a unique identity which should have its own radio station.

MKFM supports city charities and community groups by promoting their events, attending over 100 in the last year. It also features travel news, what’s on information, school closures, sports news and city-wide issues.

The station aims to support MK-based bands by featuring their music on air with live performances and open mic competitions.

MKFM's Programme Director Chris Gregg said: “It’s fantastic to be able to recognise the fantastic work of our restaurants and hospitality industry and I’m really looking forward to hosting these awards.  The whole MKFM team work very hard to provide a service to the community and we are very grateful to have been nominated as a chosen good cause by this event.  It costs over £5,000 each time we broadcast on FM just for license fees and this will really help us to stay on air.”
